2009 Montana BVD-PI Herd Screening Project - Getting Started

  1. Complete the BVD Herd Biosecurity Project "Risk Assessment" and go to the "Recommended Action Plan."
  2. If you have any questions call Clint Peck, Mo Harbac or Bruce Hoffman (contact info below).
  3. Download or print the 2009 BVD-PI Herd Screening Project Application and submit it to: Montana BQA Program, P.O. Box 172900, Bozeman, MT 59717 or fax to 406-994-5025.
  4. Once we receive the application you will be sent a sample submission kit including:
    • Red top serum tubes for individual ear-notch samples.
    • Complete sampling/submission instructions and tissue sample submission form(s).
  5. Once samples are collected, samples should be sent to API, the collaborating laboratory according to instructions on the sample submission form.

Costs PAID BY THE PRODUCER

"Ear–notch" tissue screening costs: $2.40 per sample submitted.

Additional ear-notches do not need to be submitted for re-testing purposes. Once an animal is identified as a carrier of the virus, the livestock owner/manager will be notified and further measures will be discussed. We suggest that the animal (and its dam, if still nursing) be segregated from the herd and held for re-sampling 3-4 weeks later.
